Artificial Light is the official website of novelist, screenwriter, director, musician and critic James Greer.
Greer was born in Portland, ME on April 23 1971. As a novelist, he's written BAD EMINENCE, THE FAILURE, and ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. He's also written books about R.E.M. and Guided By Voices (a band for which he briefly played bass guitar in the mid-90s), the short fiction collection EVERYTHING FLOWS, and was Senior Editor of SPIN Magazine in its early 90s heyday.
As a screenwriter, he's written UNSANE (directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Claire Foy, Juno Temple, and Matt Damon) and many other films and TV series. His forthcoming films include TWISTED (2026), starring Djimon Honsou and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, and THE CURE (2026), starring David Dastmalchian and directed by Nancy Leopardi. His directorial debut, MIRROR MOVES, is also due to be released in 2026.
Greer currently serves as Contributing Editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books and SPIN Magazine.
His first two novels, ARTIFICIAL LIGHT and THE FAILURE, will be re-issued in 2026 via Rare Bird Lit. A French translation of BAD EMINENCE will be published by Editions Abstract in late 2026.
He lives in Los Angeles.
